Components

• Head/Body: This contains the light source and is the main body of the instrument.
• Speculum: A cone-shaped attachment that is inserted into the ear canal. It comes in various sizes, suitable for both adults and children.
• Lens: A magnifying lens on the otoscope helps the examiner get a better view of the inner ear.
• Light Source: Modern otoscopes typically have LED or halogen bulbs, allowing for a clear view of the ear canal and eardrum.
• Power Source: This can be batteries in handheld otoscopes or electrical power in wall-mounted models.

Uses

• Examine the External Ear Canal: To check for earwax build-up, signs of infection, or any foreign objects.
• View the Tympanic Membrane (Eardrum): To look for signs of infection (like in otitis media), perforations, or other abnormalities.
• Diagnostic Tool: It’s used to diagnose ear infections, especially in children who may not be able to communicate their symptoms accurately.
